Harry Vanda and George Young put Friday on our minds, triggered Easyfever with the Easybeats, and harnessed the raw energy and power of Aussie pub rock to make superstars of AC/DC, Rose Tattoo, and the Angels. The day Vanda and Young met at Sydney’s Villawood Migrant Hostel has been called the most significant moment in Australian music history. What followed, as members of the Easybeats, producers and mentors for George’s brothers’ band AC/DC, and songwriters of a diverse range of hits from ‘Friday on My Mind’, ‘She’s So Fine’, ‘Yesterday’s Hero’ and ‘Love is in the Air’, has provided the soundtrack to the last 50 years. Featuring revelatory interviews with Vanda and Young and members AC/DC and the other chart-topping acts they worked with, this is the inspirational story of Australia’s top songwriters, producers and starmakers.

Vanda Young Inside Australia hit factory edition by John Tait Arts Photography eBooks

I purchased the US version of the Easybeats' "Friday on My Mind" LP way back in 1967 and still enjoy it. This book about Harry Vanda and George Young is well worth reading for any Easybeats fan. These guys were the Lennon and McCartney of Australia, writing and producing songs for others as well as for themselves, and influencing generations of Australian singers, musicians, and songwriters. Here we have their story, from the beginning. All five original members of the Easybeats were immigrants -- two each from England and the Netherlands, and one from Scotland. While they enjoyed some popularity in Europe, North America, and other places, they were absolutely #1 in Australia. The author overestimates their popularity in the USA, but he is, after all, writing from an Australian perspective. This is a fascinating portrait of significant Australian group. Highly recommended.

Vanda Young Inside Australia hit factory edition by John Tait Arts Photography eBooks Reviews

This book certainly gives lots of anecdotal information about the careers of vanda and young. Well over 100 pages spent on the Easybeats period. It is an interesting read if you are looking for a linear histiporical narrative, it also has some biographical material on the pair and other key players in that band and various other bands that they participated in in one way or another. It is definitely not an insiders view or Prespective on their long term role as hit makers and/ or shapers of Australian popular music or culture. Sure, it says they did it, but really only in a linear narrative form, like they produced this band and that band and this solo singer and so on. Anyone, with the slightest interest in Australian contemporary music will know most of this stuff, sure there are some interesting snippets of new information. But this is not an siders view and certainly gives no information on the hit factory, no internal perspective at all and barely a glimpse of any tools used. Hey the power of the rythm guitar, that is earth shattering news. The full listing of there material is of some interest, as is who has covered what, but hey it's not worth producing a book to give us that, it could have all been put on a website, if it's not already. And do we really need to know all the rich and famous musicians who think vanda and young are wonderful? Really! This book is a sham, as it misrepresents itself. It should be called the history of vanda and young. Have rattled my sword, I will admit, it was a nice light read. But it is not what it presents to be.
John Tait is a music enthusiast who runs his own bookshop/second hand record store and his love of The Easybeats and their main men is evident right from the start. He's spoken to many people and unfortunately had little input from George Young, the shy one but Harry Vanda takes up the slack. For those who don't know of George Young and Harry Vanda then realise they were prolific and successful songwriters and musicians firstly with The Easybeats and then when they had their fill with providing songs or producing for various artists. Many of their songs have been charting around the world for years. Songs such as Love Is In The Air, Friday On My Mind, TNT, Down Among The Dead Men and Evie and that is just some of them.

You also learn little things such as how talented Angus Young of AC/DC fame and the baby brother of George was with the guitar; the negative effect heroin had on Stevie Wright and how it ruined his life; shysters in the music industry and how poor management decisions can limit your success. The book gives you a feel for the times and it is particularly strong with The Easybeats. It is an informative book and more so because of the insights the key players give.

While it probably loses a little steam in the last 50 or so pages it is a good read and you finish it knowing more than you did at the start. Glenn A Baker in his dedication does not exaggerate when he says the book is essential reading. It is not a cut and paste job from the newspapers or music magazines. At 240 pages it contains a good index, notes, black and white photographs, references and discography and a worthy purchase. Anyone interested in Australian music would find this a must read. Vanda and Young might just be the Australian version of Lennon and McCartney or John and Taupin.

Although The Easybeats were huge in Australia in the ’60s, they’re under-appreciated elsewhere. Here in the U.S. if they’re remembered at all, it’s for their excellent single “Friday On My Mind”, which can still be heard regularly on oldies radio. John Tait’s book focuses on Harry Vanda and George Young, the principle songwriters for The Easybeats – something of an Australian Lennon and McCartney. The duo continued to work together (and apart) once the band broke up, contributing to many successful Australian acts, the most popular of which featured George Young’s younger brothers Malcom and Angus AC/DC. The book is dry and suffers from subjects who were talented professionals, but not the most fascinating people to read about. After spending 200 pages with the duo I don’t feel like I know much about them as people outside of their professional endeavors. There’s no unique personalities, no greater meaning, no social context, no wild stories – nothing but a straightforward retelling of events. Even worse, George Young declined to participate in the book, so there’s only one side of the story being told. Although the small but dedicated group of Easybeats fanatics, who this book was undoubtedly designed for, will love to hear their story; those looking for a more meaningful and compelling read will be disappointed.
Love the book a good insight into two Legends of the early Australian rock and roll
I really enjoyed this book, it was great to find out how some of the World's greatest hit songs came about. Vanda and Young are so underrated and after reading the book, you wonder why they are not Worldwide superstars like so many musicians are.
